March of 2020 would see all of that work come to a screeching halt as the global pandemic brought the world to a standstill. \nA chance encounter with a friend during this time would prove to be a turning point in his life and career. His friend owned a super telephoto zoom lens that worked with his Sony cameras and he offered to loan it to him to bring along on the daily hikes he had begun doing. He had never photographed wildlife before\, but quickly discovered he enjoyed it immensely\, and was pretty good at it. As he shared the images on social media sites\, he was surprised by the way they seemed to resonate with people\, and the overwhelming encouragement and positive feedback he received. Opportunities began to appear in unexpected ways. A project team that included members of the National Park Service approached him about participating in an effort to photograph some of Hawaii’s most endangered birds\, the goal being to raise awareness of their plight\, and funds to help save them. \n\n\n\nWe encourage you to use ride share options or public transportation. Junebug Weddings named her one of the Top 50 Best Destination Wedding Photographers in the World\, and Rangefinder Magazine featured her among its 30 Rising Stars of Wedding Photography. \nHer work has been published in International Master Photographer Vol. 1\, Vanity Fair (USA)\, Town & Country (Thailand)\, Cosmopolitan Bride (China)\, Elle (Hong Kong)\, Stuff Magazine (UK) and Vogue Italia’s PhotoVogue. She also photographed the 20th and 30th anniversary album covers for Grammy Award–winning R&B group All-4-One. Zabrina speaks at major photography conferences across the United States and Asia\, helping professional photographers take their craft to the next level. \n  \n\n\n\nBrian Leary: \nWith over two decades of experience\, Brian Leary is a professional photographer\, educator\, and mentor dedicated to helping photographers develop their technical skills and artistic vision. His expertise combines an in-depth understanding of Sony camera systems with a creative approach to composition and visual storytelling. Brian has led photography expeditions around the world\, delivered keynote presentations\, and created educational content and video tutorials for premium brands. Through his years of teaching and working with photographers\, including his experience with Samy’s Camera\, he has developed a talent for simplifying complex techniques and making photography accessible and inspiring. Today\, Brian specializes in personalized mentorship and hands-on workshops\, helping photographers master their craft\, push creative boundaries\, and discover their unique artistic voice. \n\n\n\nChris Orwig: \nChris Orwig is a photographer\, best-selling author\, creative director\, speaker and Sony Artisan of Imagery. He has photographed magazine covers\, artists\, athletes\, musicians and celebrities. He has worked with brands and publications including Google\, Patagonia\, SpaceX\, The Nature Conservancy\, Ghirardelli Chocolate\, The Surfer’s Journal\, Surfer Magazine\, Triathlete Magazine and The New York Times. He also captures the warmth of life’s personal moments through wedding\, family and portrait work. \nWhether he’s behind the camera\, teaching\, mentoring or writing\, Chris’s mission is to inspire others to become more creative and lead more meaningful lives. He’s a family man\, surfer and yogi based in Santa Barbara\, California. \n\n\n\nMoses Sparks: \nMoses was an established and in-demand professional photographer in Los Angeles for more than 20 years with clients in most of the Motion Picture and TV studios\, major magazines\, and a “who’s who” of Fortune 500 companies. \n\n\n\n  \nBy registering for this event workshop\, you agree to our Terms and Conditions. SUMMARY:Amazing Studio Portrait Workshop with Ming Lo- Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will cover the elements that make a distinctive studio portrait & explore how these elements together\ncreate unique portraits\n\n\nWe all take photos\, but what makes a portrait exceptional? What makes a portrait memorable? \nIn this class\, we will break down the elements that make a distinctive studio portrait – lighting\, wardrobe\, posing\, backgrounds\, photographic style\, and personality. And then\, we will explore how to put these elements together into a unique portrait that tells a story about the subject. \nWe will begin with classic studio three-point lighting\, the foundation for studio lighting\, and will work up to 4-5 lights for a professional look. Then\, we will move to working with a subject\, and we’ll provide tips on how to select wardrobe and how to pose a subject\, with particular attention to how these elements help tell a story about the person being photographed. \nNext\, we’ll use different backgrounds and settings to show how they can change the impact of a photo. \nLastly\, we’ll look at ways to capture the subject’s personality\, how to bring out their unique traits\, and tell a story about the person. With these elements in mind\, you can create something special for clients\, for friends\, or for family. \n** Please bring a camera and a portrait lens – ideally in the 80-120mm range to the workshop. \n\n\n\n\nInstructor Bio: \nMing has been shooting professionally for over 30 years. Ming started shooting in high school with a small Minolta camera\, in the days long before digital\, autofocus\, and screen previews\, when you had to manually focus\, estimate exposure\, and develop film at a drive-through called Fotomat. In the mid-1990s\, Ming started shooting headshots and portraits professionally. \nNot long after\, he entered the digital age\, shooting both photos and video on the latest digital cameras. As an actor and fan of visual media\, he developed his artistic sensibility by watching every film he could\, by learning lighting and shot composition on film sets\, and by applying his lessons to shooting in the field. \nAnd as an actor\, Ming especially likes capturing personalities\, always looking for what makes people unique. By the mid-2000s\, Ming was shooting photos and directing local videos for major clients such as Walmart\, Green Dot\, Bain & Co.\, and LA-18 TV. \nToday\, Ming shoots a wide variety of subjects\, including headshots\, portraits\, fashion\, street\, architecture\, real estate\, landscapes\, Milky Way\, night/neon\, and light painting. Ming is inspired to capture unique personalities\, life’s special moments\, and nature’s amazing offerings. Ming shoots primarily with Canon and Sony\, but has also had experience with Nikon\, Fuji\, Minolta\, and Panasonic video cameras. Ming also teaches for Digital Photo Academy and the California Center for Digital Arts. \n  \n\n\n\nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to our Terms and Conditions. SUMMARY:Fashion with Hard Light - George Simian - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a hands-on shooting workshop\, where we’ll set up four dynamic shooting environments: each complete with three hard lights\, grip gear\, and captivating dancer models. \nTogether\, we’ll explore how to create visually stunning\, high-impact fashion images using these dramatic lighting techniques. \nFashion photography’s priority is to grab your attention: with the striking clothes\, the models\, the location\, and especially the lighting. \nAll our past workshops have emphasized the use of Soft Light\, replicating shade and window light – but this time\, we’ll use the drama of Hard Light\, emulating the direct rays of the sun. \nHard light\, with its high contrast and intense saturation\, can create truly memorable images. Though it presents unique challenges\, such as the hard edges of the shadows\, the rapid drop-off in intensity\, and the need for additional fill lights\, the payoff is remarkable. \nWe’ll guide you through navigating these technical hurdles\, empowering you to harness the full potential of hard light. Well worth the effort to make it work. \nTo ensure your success\, we’ll kick off the workshop with a Thursday Zoom introductory session\, where we’ll delve into the theory and best practices of working with hard light. And after the Sunday hands-on shooting workshop\, we’ll reconvene for a Monday Zoom session focused on editing and post-processing techniques. This will help you seamlessly integrate the effects of hard light and achieve your desired aesthetic. \nDon’t miss this chance to elevate your fashion photography skills and create images that command attention. Join us for this transformative workshop\, and let’s explore the captivating world of hard light together. \nWORKSHOP SCHEDULE \nLecture on Zoom – Thursday\, November 12th @ 7 pm \nHands-on-Shoot – Sunday\, November 15th @ 12pm – 6 pm \nReview Session on Zoom – Monday\, November 16th @ 7 pm \nThis hands-on photography workshop will take place at Red Fox Studio in Downtown Los Angeles\, CA. The exact location will be provided to registered attendees upon registration for the workshop. \nCancellations or refund requests must be made via email 30 days prior to the start of the course. \nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to our Terms and Conditions. Click here to view our Terms and Conditions. You will be required to sign a waiver prior to the workshop. \nInstructor Bio: Former East Coast advertising photographer turned LA dance photography virtuoso. In his 30+ year adventure\, George has traveled globally\, capturing everything from corporate annual reports to magazine features. George Simian will be leading live 2-hour demos showing how to build your lighting skills step by step—starting with simple window light and working up to expressive portraits and dance photography using speedlights\, strobes\, LEDs\, and color gels. No prior lighting experience is needed. \nYou’re welcome to join us for the full series\, or drop in for whichever topics interest you most. Check the schedule and reserve your spot here. \nOn Camera Speedlight – Without the Harsh Look \nSee how a basic on‑camera flash can produce natural\, flattering light by bouncing it off walls and ceilings instead of blasting it straight at your subject. SUMMARY:Lighting on Location: Ballerinas on a Liberty Ship with George Simian
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on shooting workshop\, where we’ll set up a dynamic shooting environment with strobe lighting and ballet dancers.\n\n\nBallet is the oldest Western performance dance form — over 500 years of formal tradition built on grace\, shape\, and strength. Few subjects reward a photographer’s eye more. To sharpen that beauty\, we’re pairing it with the starkest possible contrast: the SS Lane Victory\, an authentic WWII armed cargo ship berthed in San Pedro. Ethereal dancers against decaying steel and deck guns — rust and ruffles\, grit and grace. \nWe’ve secured special permission from the SS Lane Victory for this shoot. Mark your calendar for Sunday\, December 6th 12pm-6pm. \nThis workshop centers on a skill every location photographer needs: balancing strobe with sunlight. We’ll demonstrate how direction\, light source size\, and color temperature work together to separate your subject from a busy background\, and how to make artificial light read as natural even when it’s doing all the work to overpower the sun. All lighting equipment is provided — Profoto battery-powered strobes\, triggers\, softboxes\, and light stands — professional-grade gear\, ready to shoot\, provided by Samy’s Camera. \nA group of young ballet dancers in full costume will be on hand\, with guidance throughout on how to direct and frame them for the strongest images. Come prepared with a wide-angle lens\, since the ship is tight quarters\, along with backup batteries and memory cards. Wear clothes you don’t mind staining\, as everything on this ship leaves a mark\, and bring a genuine interest in dance and movement. \nTwo live online Zoom sessions round out the experience: first one three days before the workshop\, covering the lighting plan and shoot logistics\, and second one the day after the workshop\, covering the selection and uploading workflow\, and open Q&A. A week after the workshop\, you’ll submit your best images for our class web page. As in all our workshops\, dancers are compensated through image sharing — this is the condition of your permission to display these photographs. \nWorkshop Schedule: \nZoom Lecture: Thursday\, December 3rd @7pm \nHands-On Workshop: Sunday\, December 6th @noon-6 \nZoom Review Session: Monday\, December 7th @7pm \n**Please note that all dancers are young teens. Signed parental releases will be obtained\, permitting use on your social media\, website\, and portfolio. No stock use or third-party licensing of any kind is permitted\, and image usage is governed by applicable California and federal law. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nInstructor Bio: George is an ex-East-Coast-based advertising photographer\, with over 30 years of experience in providing services to Corporate and Editorial clients. Projects have included providing photography for annual reports\, advertising\, and marketing materials\, and magazine features shot at locations around the world. A life-long advocate for photographers’ rights\, he has served on both the national and the LA board of directors of the American Photographic Artists and currently leads the Los Angeles Digital Imaging Group. George is also a photography educator who has taught at UCLA Extension (2007 Instructor of the Year)\, Samy’s Camera\, and one-on-one. Every summer George leads travel photography workshops in Bali\, Indonesia. In August 2011 George was recognized as one of the 13 Best Workshop Instructors\, nationwide\, by PDN Magazine\, the Bible of the commercial photography industry. In July 2018 Digital Photo Pro Magazine profiled him and his specialized lighting of dancers and acrobats\, in a feature article that can be read here (https://www.digitalphotopro.com/profiles/the-art-of-movement) \n\n\nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to our Terms and Conditions. SUMMARY:Digitizing Film Negatives with Natasha Calzatti - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Your negatives are irreplaceable! Learn how to capture\, store\, protect\, and archive your negatives for decades.\n\n\nWorkshop Overview \nThis hands-on workshop teaches photographers how to digitize their film negatives at home using dedicated negative capture systems; specifically the Valoi Easy35 / 120 kit and Negative Supply platforms. Students will learn how to set up a proper capture station\, photograph both 35mm and 120 medium format negatives with precision\, and process those captures into finished images using Lightroom Classic/Lightroom and Capture One. \nNo prior film photography experience is required. Whether you’ve been shooting film for years or just received your first developed roll\, this class will give you a complete\, professional-grade workflow for getting the most out of your negatives. \nYour negatives are irreplaceable; digital scans can always be remade\, but your negatives cannot. You will learn not only how to capture them beautifully\, but how to store\, protect\, and archive them for decades to come. \nBy the end of this workshop\, students will be able to: \n• Set up a Valoi Easy35/120 or Negative Supply capture station correctly \n• Handle and position 35mm and 120 medium format negatives safely and accurately \n• Configure camera settings (exposure\, focus\, white balance) for optimal negative capture \n• Invert and process film captures in both Lightroom Classic/Lightroom and Capture One \n• Apply basic color correction and tonal adjustments to film scans \n• Use Negative Lab Pro (Lightroom plugin) for streamlined inversion and color grading \n• Build a consistent file naming\, folder structure\, and backup system for negatives and scans. \nThis workshop is designed for: \n• Film photographers who want full control over their scans without relying on a lab \n• Photographers with a backlog of developed negatives they haven’t digitized yet \n• Digital photographers exploring hybrid analog/digital workflows \n• Anyone frustrated with inconsistent or low-resolution lab scans \n What to Bring: \n\nNegatives – bring at least one developed roll of 35mm or 120 film to practice with. Undeveloped fill will not work.\nCamera – a mirrorless or DSLR camera capable of manual mode is ideal.\nLaptop – bring your own laptop with Lightroom of Capture one installed (trial versions are acceptable).\nNegative Lab Pro: Optional but recommended. Install the free trial of Negative Lab Pro (Lightroom plugin) before class.\n\n  \nNote: Class equipment including Valoi\, Negative Supply and lights will be available for hands-on use. Students do not need to own this gear to participate. \nBy registering for this workshop\, you are agreeing to our Terms and Conditions. SUMMARY:Cinematic Portrait Lighting with Rory Lewis - Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Work with professional models and learn how to build a portrait that looks like a still from a film.\n\n\nMost portraits come out flat. The face is lit\, the exposure is right\, and the picture still sits on the surface of the frame with no weight to it. This class is about the opposite result: a portrait with depth\, where the face is sculpted\, the subject lifts away from the background\, and the whole image feels three-dimensional. \nRory Lewis has spent over twenty years photographing actors\, executives\, public figures and senior military officers\, and he lights every one of those sittings in the studio. Across the day he takes that approach apart and rebuilds it in front of you\, one decision at a time: where the light goes\, what it is doing to the shape of the face\, what to take away\, and when a second light earns its place. \nYou’ll spend most of the day shooting. Several professional models work the room across multiple lighting setups\, so you’re photographing real faces under real direction rather than watching a demonstration. Rory works with each attendee individually\, and the day closes with your work up on screen. \nIf you’ve attended one of Rory’s masterclasses\, this is the natural follow-up. It’s a different class with new material\, built for photographers who already know the fundamentals of studio portraiture and want to push the look further. \nWhat you’ll learn \n\nHow light direction\, distance and fall-off shape a face and give it dimension\nControl of the shadow side: ratio\, negative fill\, flags\, and why subtraction does more than addition\nSeparating your subject from the background so the portrait has depth\nWhen a second light helps and when it flattens everything you just built\nCamera decisions that drive the cinematic look: focal length\, aperture\, working distance and focus placement\nDirecting a model for stillness\, eyeline and expression\nReading your own frame on the day and knowing which one is the keeper\n\nWho it’s for \nPhotographers who are comfortable shooting in manual and have some studio or flash experience. Bring a camera and a fast lens if you have one; an 85mm or 50mm is ideal. All lighting is provided. \nCourse schedule\n11:00am What makes a portrait look cinematic \n11:30am The shaping light: one source\, and reading the shadow \n12:00pm Practical — hands-on with the models \n12:45pm Lunch break \n1:15pm Depth and separation: the second light\, earned \n1:45pm Practical — hands-on with the models \n2:30pm Camera craft: lens\, aperture\, distance and focus for a three-dimensional portrait \n3:00pm Practical — your own portrait\, start to finish \n3:40pm Review of the day’s work on screen \n4:00pm Close \nLocation: 4th Floor Classroom of Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles on Fairfax Avenue \nDon’t miss this chance to learn from Rory Lewis and transform your approach to portrait photography.
